I am refinishing a boston whaler - can i just fibreglass or should i worry about a clearcoat?

i recently acquired a 13' boston whaler, which was in pretty rough shape. i removed all the crap (the guy who owned it before me installed a lot of unnecessary things into the hull, and didn't use stainless so it all rusted out).

i've filled all the holes from the rusted bolts with an expanding foam, and have sanded all the areas in question.

i was planning to just lay a few layers of fibreglass over each section, and sand again, and then paint the entire boat. but a friend said i should just clearcoat - as that's what i'd be glassing over anyways.

any suggestions? thanks!I am refinishing a boston whaler - can i just fibreglass or should i worry about a clearcoat?
1. you will need to fill and sand the repairs will an epoxy filler.

2. prime repairs with epoxy undercoat/ highbuild

3. sand hull and repairs smooth with 180 grit or smoother.

4. mask fittings etc that you dont want paint on

5. clean surface with a cleaning solvent- prepsol

6. paint hull with new paint - see marine paint stockist for info on correct paint choice for your use, experience and application method

This a guide of the minimum preparation that should be done to paint a glass hull by brush.

I think your friend is talking about gelcoat which is hard to make repairs look good especially if you have to ask how

I think painting the hull is the way to go for you
