Looking for some sort of storage unit to fit under the seat in a 2005 Boston Whaler Sport 130.?

Whaler Sport 130. I would suggest getting a dry bag at a marine store and taking it on and off the boat. There is not much hull to drill into, plus the layout is tricky. Usually the best bet (besides building a deck) is getting a removable waterproof bag and fitting it under the seats. I know its kind of inconvienent, but it will work just fine.

Boston Whaler Montauk 15' opinions?

Any owners with thoughts on this boat? Buying experience and prices paid?Boston Whaler Montauk 15' opinions?
Good boat.Boston Whaler Montauk 15' opinions?
I have the 15' "Sport", Great Boat ! it can go places no other 15' would DARE go, Are you refering to the 17' Montauk model ? In either case it's the best boat in that size class, HANDS DOWN ! double hulled constructruction filled with closed cell floatation makes them UNSINKABLE, even after 2000 rounds from a machine gun, it still floats, they drive trucks over them and the hull's don't break (you don't see the competition doing that). They are expensive but, simple, I paid $3100 for my 15' sport in 1990 without a trailer, I still have the boat ! 2- summers ago there was a jet ski accident in the bay, a kid jumped a wake, and hit a bouey, it knocked him out, and injured him badly, the current drifted him up into the tidal flats at high tide, other boats could NOT get to the unconscience kid and were calling the coast guard, I just hit the "Tilt" UP on the engine, and with my "Shallow Draft" nosed up to the kid, grabbed his head out of the water "GOTCHA" !, the coast guard showed up (in less than 10 minutes), we put a backboard on him (broken hip), but could not get him on board with 3 people lifting, the poor kid was in agony, the coast guard to my surprise said, "is it O.K if we slide him onto the "Whaler" since it's lower to the water", I said "Let's Go", we did, the backboard slid right on the nose, the CG got on board, and their boat gave me an escort to a waiting ambulance, the kid lived, and another whaler "LEGEND" is born. People say to me "how can you afford to put your family in a "Boston Whaler" ?..... My reply.... "How can I afford NOT to" ! His mother called and thanked me, she also called "Whaler" and THANKED THEM !

i have a 1980 (i think its an 80 mite be 70, its one of the originals not made any more) boston whaler, i have a 1990 30 horse evinrude on it but the engine is starting to fade into oblivion, i was wondering what you guys thought the maximum size outboard i could put on it, i was thinking a 50What do you think is the maximum size outboard a 13 ft whaler can handle?
according to a history of boston whaler, 40hp is the maximum size outboard.

check to see if there is a capacity plate mounted on the inside of the transom, it will tell you max.capacity.

take a look at this web site for more info on your whaler

i believe that boston whaler can only handle 35hp, any new 4stroke will make that boat fly, w/ less gas burning,What do you think is the maximum size outboard a 13 ft whaler can handle?
A 40 Tohatsu, the best small HP engine, a tank !!
I would think a 40 hp would sure be big enough, That is a pretty light boat. I personaly have a 15ft Glastron, with a 40hp, Merc. Although it is considered a, "Speed Boat" it travels quite well in the water. To big of a motor actually can cost you money in fuel, and the boat might become a bit unstable. Sometimes smaller is actually better. Good Luck. Have fun, Be safe. What do you think is the maximum size outboard a 13 ft whaler can handle?
Honda 30 @ 160 lbs. will move that Whaler with ease fully loaded with extra fuel and max passengers. a 40 puts about an extra 40 lbs on transom, I would rather carry that weight centered forward. Maybe an extra 6 gallons of fuel and a case of beverages on ice.
My 1987 13' sport has a 50hp evenirude and it runs great with tilt and trim.
There is a plate inside your boat that tells you the maximum HP that you can use; it to tell s you the maximum weight etc for the boat. It is usually white adn about 4" by 6" with the data on it. IF you are using the boat for maximum capacity or maximum speed then the difference in HP and even prop will make a difference, and you should contact a boat dealer in your area and ask them what motors they have for what prices. Since you will only have the one motor make sure you buy a quality motor. Personally I used a 30HP Tohatsu 2cylinder, 2 stroke on my Addictor 220 Race boat and it is an awesome motor. The 25 and 30HP motors are basically the same and the 40HP is only a little larger and heavier physically. A friend that bought the boat from me is still running it and I bought it new in 1984. The thing still screams with the stock prop or even a single person in the boat with the cupped prop for speed! On fresh water, with two people and the 30 HP Motor I was clocked at 56MPH, but when I race I am always alone in the boat, so I could have been going faster without my passenger in the boat. The boat empty weight was 220lbs. Although some of the people racing used 40HP motors the shaft was longer (more drag) and on the open ocean like from Newport, CA to Catalina Island 22miles and over the horizon, they had no advantage over the 30HP. They were larger, heavier, longer shaft...still a very great motor. Talk to a Japanese Fisherman or someone that knows Tohatsu and they will tell you that it is the "Cadillac" of motors. I only know Tohatsu for 2 stroke motors adn my 4 stroke experience is very limited. Mercury "Black Power" has been the name but I only hear great things about Yamaha and so on.
I had a 50 Johnson with a jack plate but the hull comes with a hull speed built in and the faster U go the bow is pushed down if U trim it up it will porpoise and pound U. I filled %26amp; fiberglassed the last 20" of the hull bottom and made it flat no more porpoising quite fast but won't turn at high speed.

Boston Whaler 13 - Does anybody own one?

I'm thinking about buying one for Florida intercoastal water and looking for any input (good, safe, etc.).Boston Whaler 13 - Does anybody own one?
The 13' Whaler has been around for a long time. They are well built boats that have stood the test of time. However, it is a 13' boat, and with low free board (sit low in the water) you will get wet. And they bounce around and in heavy seas take water over the bow, which as Whaler claims does simply Flow through the boat and out the back.

I actually liked the 15' a lot better.

There are several less expensive alternative boats available, so I'd make sure it's what I wanted before I buy!Boston Whaler 13 - Does anybody own one?
    Well this depends.

Is it a "NEW" model? The new type are VERY competent in seas, even the 13 foot model. The newer model has a conventional bow, with a semi-V hull.

The older "Classic" style 13', the one that started out in 1958, is also a great skiff, but it is essentially a flat-bottom skiff and while unsinkable (yes!) it will give a bit of a rough ride in a chop.

If it is an older model, be sure that it is actually a Whaler--- and not a fixed up copy (it happens a lot) and also be sure the engine is the right shaft height. Older models (blue interior) are mostly "short shaft" or "standard" and need a 15" or 16.5" (old measurments) length motor. This is recognized by the cut-down stern motor mount area. Newer models use 20" shaft motors.

You should have at least 20 hp. A 25 hp works great. There is little benefit from any more power-- you will not go much faster (who are you racing anyway) because the boat stays flat- with all of the bottom in the water at all planing speeds, but you will be able to pull up an adult waterskier easier with a bigger motor--- if it is on there. The mfg rating is maximum 40 hp for the classic 13.

Remote steering is nice to have--- but plenty of the older ones use a tiller handle on the motor.

Older short-shaft models tend to work best with the original style cable and pulley steering, because special mounting is needed to put Telflex type on because of the transom cut-out. Long-shaft model boats will use the Telflex steering fine--- with the push-pull cable mounted directly to the motor.

If you get an older used one--- the BOAT holds its value with no depreciation, even some appreciation. The hardware--- like motors and trailers are subject to depreciation as usual.

Many of this model have a rail along each side. SOME have a bow rail which I personally find "in-the-way" on this boat.

A very nice thing to add would be a simple "bimini" sun-top. Especially for the Florida sun.Boston Whaler 13 - Does anybody own one?
boston whaler is one of the best brands in that type of boat, and they are good hulls for rougher waters.

but the 13 is a bit small and will bounce around or take on water in ROUGH waters a lot easier then any of the larger models. great for large lakes, but ont he ocean i'd want more boat.

I have a old boston whaler that is very heavy, can u remove the foam to make it lighter?

You can do anything, but by removing the foam, you also will remove the buoyancy that makes a Boston Whaler such a safe choice!

If you are planning on putting the boat in the water, leave the foam in!!I have a old boston whaler that is very heavy, can u remove the foam to make it lighter?
think about how much foam weighs. The resulting loss of bouyancy is far less than the amount of weight you are saving.I have a old boston whaler that is very heavy, can u remove the foam to make it lighter?
first- you cant remove the foam. second- why remove the lightest part of the boat.I have a old boston whaler that is very heavy, can u remove the foam to make it lighter?
the loss of the foam is not going to make much of a difference in whatever it is that you are looking to do. that foam that you have (should something happen) will only allow the boat to sink so far. what you are looking to do just might cost you your life and the life of someone else.
Having had Boston Whalers for 40 years, I'll tell you exactly why the boat is so heavy....there are either cracks or scrapes or holes in the inner or outer layer of fiberglass and water has gotten inside the hull.....while the foam doesn't soak up the water it doesn't do anything about keeping it out.So cracks on the inside have let in rain or wave water, on the outside the sea, and theres gallons and gallons in there.......even though the foam takes up all the space between the hulls, there are enough nooks and crannies and voids that there is LOTS of water in there. At 6.5 pounds a gallon for fresh and 7.0 lbs per gallon for salt

The only cure...and believe me, I've seen dozens of different ways of solving this problem, is haul the boat out of the water, prop it up so the transom is lower, and then drill a half dozen 1/8th inch holes in the bottom,at the low point, thru the fiberglass and into the foam ( about an inch deep, say).

Now go away for a month, if not longer. Fix the holes you drilled and any other spots on the bottom, inside and out....the boat will be hundreds of pounds lighter and will get up and fly with the same outboard that gave only sluggish performance....and you wont have to do this again for 20 years.

oh yeah, you cant take the foam out because its what provides space and structure between the inner and outer hulls.take the foam out and the whole thing collapses

Can you give me an idea of the maintenance (&costs) required for 15ft outboard 65hp boston whaler motorboat?

    Freshwater --

Engine maint (assuming 3-cylinder 2-stroke outboard):

Annual gear oil change, $75 - $100 (DIY about $10).

    Water pump service every 2 years, $150 - $200 (DIY about $60).

    Minor tune-up every 2-3 years, $200 - $300 (DIY about $20 - $50).

Fuel lines, fittings, a few bucks every few years.

    Lower unit seals, every 5 - 10 years, %26gt;$300 (DIY %26lt; $75).

Battery, keep it charged when not in use, add water when needed, should last 4 or 5 years.

Use a fuel conditioner and/or take the boat out %26amp; run it every 4 weeks or so will avoid costly carb rebuilds (at least $125 per carb, ($12 DIY)).

Prop service, every few years, %26lt;$100.

Forget the oil, or crank it without a water supply to the L/U, or run it into an underwater obstruction, or drop it onto the ramp, you'll spend a bundle.

Hull maintenance: expect corrosion and a harsh environment to take its toll on electrical wiring and fasteners (things bolted down tend to come unbolted with all the shock %26amp; vibration), you'll probably spend a few hundred bucks every couple years.

Trailer: tires usually wear out from exposure and underinflation with plenty of tread remaining. Hubs, keep 'em the bearings greased, check 'em every couple years.

Running in salt water will cost you more, but I have no experience with that.

On top of all that, expect something to break just about every other time you take it out, usually more annoying than costly, but you'll spend $20 here or $100 there.

With a boat, you want to stay on top of maintenance -- nothing's worse than dragging a boat 150 miles only to find that 6 weeks of disuse has caused some little problem that keeps you off the water. Can you give me an idea of the maintenance (%26amp;costs) required for 15ft outboard 65hp boston whaler motorboat?
congratulations on your new boat! the more you use it the better, dont leave it sitting for months like most people, anyway the costs are similar to a car, oil, services twice a year$250 for a decent service, the rest you do yourself ie:keeping it clean and stuffCan you give me an idea of the maintenance (%26amp;costs) required for 15ft outboard 65hp boston whaler motorboat?
If it runs good now, cools properly, starts fine, you could use this for many years with little or no maintenance costs. At the end of the boating season, disconnect the fuel line from the motor and run the engine til it stops, so gas in the carb doesn't gunk up. Use any leftover gas in the tank in your lawnmower, snowblower or whatever. Check your lower unit grease for water, squirt a little oil in each cylinder (through the spark plug holes) turn over the engine a few times with spark plug wires off. Ready to store. In spring, put in fresh gas and oil mix, new spark plugs every 3 to 4 years and you are good to go. " Don't fix it if aint broke" is good advice from an old mechanic.

    13 ft Boston Whaler limitations?

I'm thinking about buying this boat with a 40 HP yamaha 4 stroke and live in coastal south florida. Is this boat okay for driving along the shore? What should I watch for? How many feet of water? How do I check/learn about these things?13 ft Boston Whaler limitations?
Do yourself a favor as you do not seem to know much, take a course at your local power squadron or similar organization before you endanger yourself or others. Am not certain on the HP rating or engine weight for the 13 ft Boston Whaler, but a 40 HP 4 stroke sounds like a bit much and the engine is considerably heavier than a conventional 2 stroke.13 ft Boston Whaler limitations?
before you buy a boat take the small boat safety course. this will give you basic boating knowledge about safety, rules of the road, navigation, boaters weather etc. this course will also discuss boat types, hull shape etc.

a 13' foot whaler is a good boat for running around in FL coastal waters. the 40hp yahama is about the right size for it (its not too big). whalers are foam filled unsinkable boats.

we used 13' whalers as our rescue boats (river rescue) and they worked very well.

they can also be rigged with a Bimini top to help protect you from the FL. sun.

sounds to be like a great first boat.13 ft Boston Whaler limitations?
I've used these 13-footers before. They're rated for a 40hp 2-stroke, which works fine- the 4-stroke is quite a bit heavier, and, in all honesty, I'm not familiar with how that'll work. That being said, the 13-footers are very durable boats, so long as the core isn't too waterlogged- even so, you don't want to be in seas greater than 1-2 feet with them, as they've only got a foot of freeboard.
Best check out the whaler if an old 1 as there foam filled and have issue with holding water inside the hull and making it quite heavy and performing terrible. They also have a trim built into the hull that makes it bow down when running. The 4 stroke is nice but very heavy for this small boat. With limited free board fair weather and little wind before venturing out. There are other V hulls that won't pound U to pieces for less $$.Have had most all.Take 1 out in a small chop and U will see the hard wet ride.

Will my 13-ft Boston Whaler keep the motor dry when it swamps (and other Qs)

I've seen numerous web pages that claim that it will keep the power head dry, and some that even say you can leave the drain plug uninstalled (but I'm not sure if the latter applies to with-engine or not).

One note: The transom has a 1/8" stainless plate installed (non-watertightly) on the inner surface, and the bolts attaching the motor pass through the plate. It looks like originally the center foot or so of the transom was made a few inches lower than the rest of it, but that's been built up to flush with a wooden spacer. The main motor support bracket, which I think normally would hook over the transom, is actually about 1.5 inches above the transom spacer. All this raising of the engine may just be a means of accommodating a longer shaft.

So, do you think my '72 13-foot Whaler with a '92 40 hp Force engine can survive a deluge?

Also, can you guess what my mileage will be at economy cruise?

And, is 40 hp overkill for that boat, and can the motor break the transom, with the usual wave slap happening and being cantilevered up so far?

Many thanks for any info you can provide, especially experience-based.

Will my 13-ft Boston Whaler keep the motor dry when it swamps (and other Qs)
We were dealers for Boston Whailer in 1972, so I know your boat. The transum was for a short shaft, an in those days the 40HP was the recommended motor. I have personally been in the Cheasapeke Bay in a swamped 13 ft whaler with a 40 short shaft. in 5 to 7 ft swells. The motor would not only start and run,(power head out of water), but it actually caused water to self bail over the transum, and then it drained through the drain hole until almost all of it was out. I agree the spacer was to use the more common long shaft motor. Height and bracket isn't as important as the depth of the drive (prop) and angle to the bottom of the boat. I could run 3 - 4 hours on a 6 gal tank, but I wasn't full throttle much and not pulling skiers. I hope his info helps. BOL
The boat passed the plug-out test with (I think) flying colors per RC's and RNuts's predictions; water settled at about 10" below the transom. While I realize the option of leaving the plug out may be the safest, it's also the biggest pain in the butt in terms of bailing and cleaning, (more)

It will float full of water upright and with engine block several inches above the water. I have had mine full of water and was able to pull the plug and drain it with 3 adults on board. These boats are amazing.

Also you can leave the drain plug out when leaving the boat in the water so it will not fill up from rain. Some water will come in from outside but it stops. When you are ready to use the boat again you will have to bail out maybe 2 gallons of water or just leave the plug out while you are running and it will drain out.

My Whaler was a 1966 with a 1986 25hp Evinrude. I could get 10mpg at cruise by myself. The 40 Force will probably get 6-8 mpg.

    5,750 RPM's

    47.7 Miles Per Hour...or..(41.4 Knots)

I take it you may mean a 15' dauntless. There has only been a 13' and 14' model but given the horsepower of the motor I would suggest it maybe is a Dauntless 15.

The Dauntless 15 has the following stats:

    15-DAUNTLESS length: 15' 1" dry weight: 850 lb

A new Mercury EFI 4 stroke 50 hp has a dry weight of 248 lb.

Carolina skiff jv 17 or boston whaler montauk 15?

hello i am a 15 year old and my dad recently bought both of these boats. i am very experienced with boats and outboards alike. he said i could pick one of the 2 boats for myself here the the pros and cons of each boat

    Carolina skiff-

    pros- bigger, has bimini.

cons- more gas, slow, more maintence, needs engine work.

    Boston whaler-

pros- has stereo, depth/fishfinder, accessories, bigger engine, less maintence.

    Cons- smaller, no bimini.

im going to be using the boat mainly for fishing and going to the nearby island

which one is better/which one should i keepCarolina skiff jv 17 or boston whaler montauk 15?
The whaler looks like it would be YOUR best choice.

The Carolina Skiff maybe a more stable fishing platform, but if the engine is questionable that would not be good to have it break down and not be able to motor home.

15 ft. Boston Whaler (70hp) or a 12ft. alumnacraft (7.5) on Lake. Michigan? (near shore) Is it safe enough???

me and 2 of my cuzins took a 10 ft zodiac with a 6hp motor out on lake michigan one day and it was a blast! the waves were huge! we agreed to take my alumnacraft next time, but I'm afraid that it would be dangerous because I already fell out of it once and nearly got ran over by it. Now we have a nice Whaler, but I'm not sure if that would be safe enough to take out to lake michigan either. We would go out about 1,500 ft. at most, but i'm not sure.15 ft. Boston Whaler (70hp) or a 12ft. alumnacraft (7.5) on Lake. Michigan? (near shore) Is it safe enough???
You can cut a whaler in half with a chainsaw and both halves will float. When I was a kid, We ran one of these on a lake for skiing. distance from land isnt an issue, esp on a nice day.

however, If you cant navigate, I'd keep land within sight.

    Stay safe and have fun!
Yes but be alert. I have seen a 17 foot boat (flats style) get over run and sank by a small wave that came out of nowhere. Wear a life jacket and have a radio and flares.15 ft. Boston Whaler (70hp) or a 12ft. alumnacraft (7.5) on Lake. Michigan? (near shore) Is it safe enough???
Nice, you have the Whaler. It's a fine, very safe boat and if you're going out in decent weather you'll be fine. If there are whitecaps on the lake, be careful. The Whaler is unsinkable so if you do capsize, stay with the boat. Stay sober, carry a vhf radio ( you can get help on channel 16) and have fun. wear your PFD and you'll be fine.
I think you answered your own question about boating safety because most major injuries or fatalities are from being smashed under one that suddenly flips or being tossed out of one and getting run over or becoming prop fodder. The relatively small Zodiac is actually very wide for its length and more wave worthy than either of the two boats you mentioned because an inflatable tends to flex with the waves, has an extremely low center of gravity, and isn't as easily flipped over as a hard-hull boat.

You can safely go out on Lake Michigan, the ocean, or a relatively small inland lake in a canoe if you use a little common sense, don't go out in waves your craft (or your seamanship) can't handle, and stay close enough to shore so that you won't get caught out in a quick change of wind or weather. Of course, the PFD is always a must; but it won't help at all when your boat is coming at, or down, on you from a poor decision or moment of carelessness.

My best advice is to study some good online sources for boat-handling tips, basic navagation rules, how to take waves, and other good advice before going out in anything. Unlike most cars that generally handle about the same, all boats take some "getting used to" because each one will handle very differently in different situations. After you've learned all the basics, learn your boat by carefully getting the feel of its handling strong points and weak points. As a retired rescue diver, there have been many times when I've taken a little 14' aluminum semi-V with a 20hp outboard into waves that had capsized 25' ski boats. Just remember that a little knowledge and skill combined with a lot of common sense will do more for you than the boat itself will do.15 ft. Boston Whaler (70hp) or a 12ft. alumnacraft (7.5) on Lake. Small Boston Whaler = Lake Fishing Boat?

I have an 8 or 9 foot basic non center console Boston Whaler in pretty good condition. I want to turn it into a fishing boat. I would like it to be able to handle a large lake. I already have a motor and a trolling motor for it, but I want to transform it into a true fishing boat. Do you think it would work pretty well? As in fish, I mean largemouth bass and hybrids (stripers). If you do think it would work pretty well, what are some things I could add to it?? (It is completely bare of everything except a live well and two bench like seats in the middle of the boat)Small Boston Whaler = Lake Fishing Boat?
If you are an realatively calm waters, you should be fine.

Boston Whalers can actually handle very rough water, but they are not comfortable in such because they are flatbottomed.

My guess is that you will outgrow it pretty quick and wish you'd started with a larger boat to trick out.Small Boston Whaler = Lake Fishing Boat?
You could re-configure the boat to include Pedestal seats, aerated live well %26amp; such, but, i believe that your boat would be too small to make an adequate fishing boat, for an open lake, where you might experience some rough water

Using a 17' Boston Whaler, what is the minimum hp motor that would be needed for water skiing?

In a boat that size, the smallest motor that I think could get a single skiier up would be about 35 HP. A larger motor will get them up more quickly, but smaller than 35 will result in the skiier having to mush along too long while they're trying to transition to planing, while it is harder to balance. Hope this helps.Using a 17' Boston Whaler, what is the minimum hp motor that would be needed for water skiing?
Big Boat! Treads a lot of water. I suggest triple 150hp. outboards. Extra planes will help. Lowering center of gravity (bottom heavy-instead of top heavy) will increase odds of surviving any change of direction. Replace the gun turrent with a diving board (with hand rails) to give a WOW factor that includes bouncing beauties of the 1'st kind. Aft provisions should include surface snorkeling with a lost and found bin.

A buddy of mine is selling a 1987 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with an '87 90hp Johnson. Both are in better than average condition. Most things on the boat are origional and have been taken really good care of. The lower unit has been rebuilt and the motor runs good. He is asking $6,500. Is this a good deal? When you're going to plunk down the kind of cash you'll need to buy any of these boats, you better believe they'll take you out for a test drive. If a dealer gives you a hard time about test driving them, just thank him for his time, stand up and head for the door. If you take the second step I'll be amazed. In this economy they don't want to lose the sale. Just ask to try all three boats in the conditions you're expecting to be using them in. To be honest with you, I think all three of the boats you're looking at are too big. You don't say what you want the boat for. Myself, I'm a fisherman, and have no problem at all out in the ocean with 16 to 20 ft boats.

Am I better off getting a 199515' Boston Whaler Rage 115 hp Jet boat or 1995 Seadoo 170hp Jet Boat-same prices

I am shopping for a boat that would be used in the ocean and in a half fresh half salt water river. I would like a jet boat, as the river can be low at many places. If I can get them for the same price, do you think I am better off buying a 1995 Boston Whaler Rage Jetboat (newer 115 omc engine installed, runs well) or a 1995 Seadoo Speedster Jet boat (dual 135 engines, runs well)? In the Whaler, the owner (who is a mechanic) said the engine overheated, and he replaced the head gaskets and it ran pretty well. He then put in a newer engine that was in better shape, and it runs very well. Does the turbo jet have a bad rep? I see people converting it to outboard and it makes me wonder. And for the Seadoo--- bad saltwater boat? Anyone know about the rep's of these engines? thanks!!Am I better off getting a 199515' Boston Whaler Rage 115 hp Jet boat or 1995 Seadoo 170hp Jet Boat-same prices
I would go Whaler all the way - first off, I know jet boats sound cool - but they are really kind of crappy for any rough water conditions - with conventional drives (inboards, outboards, I/O's the prop actually keeps the boat in the water, whereas with a jet boat like the sea doo you'll be coming out of the water on just about every wave and loosing power for a second, I have actually never met someone who was really happy with their jet boat after some time on it.

That being said - I have owned 2 sea doo and have worked on countless others, and I think they are some of the best performing jet boats, and ski's but they are the worst built, just very cheap and they break A LOT. I have never used on the the omc jet drives but I have also never heard anything bad about them - and as you mentioned, if in the end you see that jet boats are not what they are cracked up to be you can change out the lower drive unit and turn in into an out board - and to me that is a sweet boat.

Those OMC's tend to run forever (and a 1995 is pre sea doo (bombardier) buying OMC) so it is a great motor, you'll have no problem finding people to fix it or to find parts (might have problems with parts for the jet drive though)

No real boater would tell you that a Sea Doo is a better boat then the Whaler - I think this is a no brainer - get the Whaler.

Also - Whaler's hold their value MUCH better then sea doo's - as I said people buy sea doo boats, keep them for a year and move on to real boats, whereas people keep Whalers foreverAm I better off getting a 199515' Boston Whaler Rage 115 hp Jet boat or 1995 Seadoo 170hp Jet Boat-same prices

I would'nt count on the Sea Doo for that !

    13 ft Boston Whaler Value?

I'm looking into buying a 1987 13 ft Boston Whaler that has been completely refinished and it has a 2004 40 HP 4 stroke Yamaha motor. They are asking $5300, is this a good deal? What should I offer? It also includes:

Just a quick search showed asking prices up to $9500.

  • My 13 foot Boston Whaler is water logged.?

I have 60's model 13 foot Boston Whaler. It is completely water logged. It now weighs, in my best guess, double what a normal Whaler of the same size would weigh. Is there any way to get the water out and to reduce the weight of the boat? I will try anything. Please HelpMy 13 foot Boston Whaler is water logged.?
I'm presuming the hull is flooded with water. If your reference is to the wood part of the frame, can't help there.

If its water in the bilge area, you have 2 choices.

    1. Remove the "plug" from the back, get a jack and CAREFULLY, raise the boat until the water starts to drain. If you do it too fast, obviously the weight shift of water will send it crashing down on the stern. ( I'm presuming it is out of the water too.....)

    2. The only other option is to take a drill, and at the bow, drill a small ( about 3/16" ) hole, being careful not to allow water to flood the drill ( electricity )..........do it fast. If the water doesn't start to drain, take a phillips head screw driver and work it into the hole until water starts to drain.

    3. Pick up any fiberglass repair kit, fill the hole, sand it and if need a little paint.

If your Whaler is in water, you'll have to get it lifted to dry land.My 13 foot Boston Whaler is water logged.?
I have previous experience with Boston Whalers, having been (in a previous life) manager of a marina.

The number one cause of waterlogged hulls is a crack or hole. The hull is a composite/foam-filled material. If a hole allows water inside, it starts acting sort of like a sponge. The foam, if allowed to stay water logged for a long period will deteriorate and the hull might not be salvageable.

It needs to be thoroughly dried out then any holes or cracks repaired.

However, to see if that is even worthwhile doing, it should be inspected by a trained Boston Whaler service, preferably at a reputable marina or boat brokerage.

A boat of that age might be beyond saving. My 13 foot Boston Whaler is water logged.?
Wow! Chances are that the gel coat has been broken and capillary action has sucked water into the hull structure. You have to dry the boat out. Put you boat into a very, very warm and dry place and be patient. Next re-do the exterior with a new gel coat. Don't leave the boat sitting in the water! Take it to shore and upend it. It will dry out. Note: Resin and glass form mechanical bonds. Use causes the glass and resin to separate. The interstice invites water to invade the structure and it dissolves the resin!

    Type of Boston Whaler?

Not sure how to word this... but I am trying to find out the model of a Boston Whaler I have seen. It is small - probably the smallest boat I have seen on the great lakes, but it also seems able to fit 4 or so comfortably. The distinctive thing I have noticed about it is its size. And that it is a Boston Whaler. I can also say it does not look brand new nor is it the oldest.

Hmmm - if you can help - a picture would be great... and I will certainly be appreciative!Type of Boston Whaler?
You're looking at the "Boston Whaler 13' sport, or the 15' sport, they have been making the 13' for almost 50 years, 1958-2008, the 15' sport has been in production for 31 years since 1976. The 13' max H.P. is a 40 HP, the 15' max. H.P. is 70 HP, and the foam is "closed cell" floatation so it can't get water logged too easily, these hull's break ice, and will NOT sink even when sawed in half, they run them over with a truck, hull's don't crack, they even fired over 2000 rounds of machine gun fire at one, and ithen towed it back, still did'nt sink.
Go to the Boston Whaler website. Google it.Type of Boston Whaler?
The older Boston whaler claim to fame is they wont sink but they will fill with water in the foam an can weigh a ton so make sure it's not water lodged or you will be very unhappy ???Look on http://www.boattraderonline.com/ there are always some for sale%26gt;%26gt;??

What is The Biggest Outboard motor can I put on a 1977,14 foot Boston Whaler?

My boyfriend who works on boats all the time said a 115 yamaha would fit nice on it might be a little over overpowered as long as your hull is nice and sturdy and your transom is good you should be fine putting that on there. What is The Biggest Outboard motor can I put on a 1977,14 foot Boston Whaler?
    It depends on many things.

1.) Check the "certification plate", likely on the transom. It should have a maximum recommended horsepower. If the plate is missing, look up a similar sized new Boston Whaler -- it will likely be similar.

2.) Check the transom. Most fiberglass boats usually have wood reinforcing under the fiberglass in the transom. I believe Boston Whalers are the built in this fashion -- maybe another reader can correct me if they are not. The problem -- humidity migrates into this wood all summer long, through the fiberglass and also through any holes drilled in the transom. Come cold weather, this humidity cannot breathe out fast enough and condensation occurs. Over time, the wood gets rot in it, and the transom loses strength. So, on an older boat, you often should not put a "maximum horsepower" motor on it.

3.) If the transom is in good shape, you can exceed the maximum horsepower rating for the boat if you know what you are doing. We have gone so far as to put a 115hp motor on a boat rated for a 75hp. Before doing this, check with your insurance company to make sure they will not decline coverage. As well, if you exceed the suggested rating by more than about 20%, consider mounting the motor slightly off-centre on the transom to counter-act the torque effect. Typically the trim tab on the motor handles this, but if you over-power the boat by a great deal the trim tab may not be enough.
The hp rating on the capacity plate is determined by a formula dictated by the Coast Guard. Width, length and other dimensions I cannot remember. They say what you can put on max for safety reasons. If you want to run faster do some research on how high you can raise your motor with out cavitation of the prop (air surrounding your prop higher prop speed higher engine speed no grip on water) then you have less drag of lower unit = more speed. Put a tach on your motor and know your rpm rating for it. Not enough pitch in your prop motor over reves to much and it bogs and you go slow. A lot of variables are involved but it is worth your while to do the research th wring the most out of what you have. What is The Biggest Outboard motor can I put on a 1977,14 foot Boston Whaler?
The builder put a plate on the hull stating clearly the power and load ratings of the boat. If the builder believed the hull could handle more power they will most definitely say so - it is a marketing tool. There may be very good structural reasons why larger engines should not be fitted to this boat.

There are lots of issues with over powering a boat. You may have no insurance. The authorities may take a very great dislike for your boat and the operator if the engine is over the boat manufacturer's rated power - very much so if an incident occurs too... Then, as mentioned, the hull may easily cope with over powering when in new condition, but over time rot and stress can dramatically reduce the hull's ability to survive the extra loads.

There is your own ability to consider, there is a substantial skill level in operating a fast boat at speed, and understanding how the trim of a high speed boat affects it. It takes years to learn how to control a very fast boat with the minimum of risk, and mistakes at speed can be serious - or fatal. Getting a boat to speeds well above the designer's brief means you are in a totally unpredictable zone, all sorts of funny things could happen.

If the boat is not fast enough with the rated maximum power then upgrade - it will be far safer and probably cheaper in the end.

In my experience it is sometimes too easy to get carried away with a boat due to emotional or other attachment, but if it really isn't suitable for what you are trying to do with it then you have to consider getting a boat that does.

    And speed ALWAYS costs.
Listen to John D, but I'd also caution you. Exceeding the hull speed and/or overloading the back of the boat with weight will completely ruin the stability profile that the boat was designed with. The end result is that you can swamp the boat by decelerating, flip the boat by driving into a headwind, or simply rolling over if you take a wake or a swell on the beam. There's no legal protection for you if you claim that you didn't know better. BE careful! What is The Biggest Outboard motor can I put on a 1977,14 foot Boston Whaler?
I don't know of a 14' Whaler; the max rating on a 13' is 40HP, 15' max is 70HP. Your boat will be less controllable and waste more gas and probably not go a lot faster by overpowering it. If it's a 13', 50HP should be OK, 115 would be ridiculous. You will run your motor at such low RPMs that the prop will be less efficient and the engine will get carbon buildup.
i would think a 50 hp should be the most but check the capacity rating one the plate on the boat
I know someone with a 14' boat and he has a 150 merc on it. Maybe you can a little higher who knows.

I have a 15' "Whaler" with a 50 H.P. on the back, pretty close to the specs that you gave, I would have to say about 18 MPH or less, depending on conditions and gear, my boat is rated for 5 people, I had 5 on it once (assisted. USCG), It will hold 5 people, 4 is better, 3 is comfortable, 2 people you can rip around the Bay very fast, It's a small boat, and although very stable and safe even w/ 5 people, it is wt. sensitive, If I had to put 5 people in a small boat, I would definitely want it to be a "Boston Whaler", It's built like a truck, and has closed cell flotation throughout the hull, so if it swamps, or flips, it turns into a big surfboard, and won't sink ! yeah, i do it all the time when i go to my cottage up north. Can you tube/wakeboard/waterski behind a thirteen-foot Boston Whaler?
Yes, you can tube quite fine. Lots of kids even tube behind slower moving Party Barges, too.

Wakeboarding might be a little more difficult as manuvering the board itself requires a little more speed.

Just make sure the towline clears the engine with no snags, and the length of the towline clears the initial engine wake. Can you tube/wakeboard/waterski behind a thirteen-foot Boston Whaler?
It depends if the boat's back end will stay in place when skiing and wakeboarding. I have a 23 foot boat and I can feel the back end get pulled out a little while driving when 180lbs riders are carving hard.

    Tubing yes.

That boat was just not made for skiing and wakeboarding.

  • Are the Boston Whaler jet boats any good?

Im looking at 15 foot Boston Whaler jet boat and dont know much about them. Are they worth purchasing? Are the Boston Whaler jet boats any good?
They are a nice hull, but the engines lacked power and was soon discontinued. Look into a seadoo. They are still making a nice product and are lighter than the foam filled hulls of the whalers.
Yes, Boston Whaler is a very good boat..Are the Boston Whaler jet boats any good?
boston whaler makes really good john boats but ive never heard of them making a jet boat i would prolly look at a seadoo jetboat more reliable
YA THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!! THAT IS WHAT I HAVE!!!!!!Are the Boston Whaler jet boats any good?
They're very popular where I live. What I've heard is their fast and good for shallows.

How Fast do you think a 1981 15ft Boston Whaler Sport w/ a 70hp motor could go? (calm water, no wind)?

We just bought our neighbors but it doesnt have a speedometer. How Fast do you think a 1981 15ft Boston Whaler Sport w/ a 70hp motor could go? (calm water, no wind)?
depending on the load I would say 40 mph +/-
I will bet it will go about 40 to 45 mph.. My brother had a 16 foot bass boat with a 150 hp motor and it barely went over 60 mph so..How Fast do you think a 1981 15ft Boston Whaler Sport w/ a 70hp motor could go? (calm water, no wind)?
I would say about 40-43 mph. I have a 14 ft boat with a 25hp motor and it will go about 25-27 mph. Get it going wide open and get someone in another boat to ride beside you and tell you how fast you are going.
38 MPHHow Fast do you think a 1981 15ft Boston Whaler Sport w/ a 70hp motor could go? (calm water, no wind)?
That's a lot of motor on a 15 ft boat, evan as heavy as a Whaler is built you should see 35 mph pretty realistically, perhpas more, depending on your prop and what elevation you are running at. Most gps units can tell you your speed.
Theses speeds sound good for a 70hp. If you want blow your buddy* away, wax the hull with hard stuff that has Carnauda in it. Tune-up the engine, get an SST prop in the right pitch, check your tilt pin, you need the bow up but not to high.

AV GAS (aviation fuel 100-110 octane a few drops of extra oil). Remember I will not be held accountable for any of these modifications.

P.S Put a TACH in it. Top end who knows, let's find out.

37-40+ mph maybe. Use a GPS.
I was also thinking 40 mph. Fast enough for a 15 footer, it'll feel a lot faster. Have fun, be safe, wear your PFD!
240mph AT least, that thing sounds like a beast
Propped %26amp; trimmed correctly you should be able to get 44-48mph with the 70. Don't waste your time using race fuel, it will not benefit the performance, it will actually detract from it since higher octane=slower burn. Race fuel benefits a modified engine and the slower burn helps prevent pre-ignition / detonation which occur when compression is raised %26amp;/or timing advanced.

    Have fun!

How to operate a Boston Whaler Rage 15 boat?

With safety if new to boating have some 1 with knowledge show you the correct and safe way%26gt;How to operate a Boston Whaler Rage 15 boat?
i have a one of those boats. Assuming yours is a jet drive they are pretty good for someone learning how to run a boat. As long as the bottom is sand you can hit the bottom without doing to much damage to the boat. But with the Jet Drive be careful not to run over sea weed and especially not rope because it will get caught in the jet. IF stuff does get stuck you have to try and put the boat in reverse and floor it then put in forward a floor it. If the stuff doesn't come out you will either have to jump in the water to clear it out or bring the boat up on land to clear the prop. Have fun, its a really fun boat because you can go into shallow water than outboards cant even go near.

To answer your quastion yes they are very safe boats. Is a Boston Whaler boat one of the safest small craft on the water?
NO!Is a Boston Whaler boat one of the safest small craft on the water?
Yes. Whaler enthusiasts might point out that whalers built from 1996 onward have less "reserve buoyancy" than older hulls, due to changes in construction technique implemented by Whaler's current owner (Sea Ray).

The Montauk 17 and 13 Super Sport are super stable and unsinkable, and last forever.

Continuous Wave (see source below) is the authoritative Boston Whaler online community, with tons of detail on all things Whaler.
Boston Whalers are very well built boats and have extraordinary bouyancy due to the fact that they are filled with bouyant foam. One can cut a Whaler in half with a chainsaw and both halves will float. Water cannnot get inside the hull of the boat, making them as unsinkable as a boat can be. They are a well made craft, and very durable and reliable.

What's the maximum engine wieght for a 13 ft boston whaler?

There is a HP/weight cap. plate near the helm. Most of these have from 40 to 60 HP engines with the engine around 150 lbs. First check the maximum horsepower rating on a plate usually somewhere on the transom, inside or outside. 90 sounds like a lot for a 15 foot boat. Honda would be my first choice, but any new or late model 4 stroke with low hours would be a good choice. 60 hp would probably be plenty. All 50's are not equal. Both in actual power and weight. An 80's 50 Evinrude/Johnson would run rings around the "Force" (Chrysler) 50 of that time. And the Evinrude 50 was a better and lighter engine than the older 40 HP Evenrude marketed for years. So, I've seen quite a few on 13' Boston Whalers. However you need to be mindful of the Max. HP. which is an indication of weight and safety. Boston Whaler came out with the 15' after my time with a Whaler dealer, so I don't have hands on experience with it, but I'd bet it would be a better choice with the 50 HP engine. So I'm a trade up kind of guy.......sell what you have, add a little cash and get what you want!1986 Boston Whaler I need a little advice?

How much does it cost to replace the motor for a 13ft Boston Whaler?

Approximately $100 per horsepower. Less if you can can fined a used engine and controls on ebay, craigslist or the local marina. And getting the controls with the proper length cables and wiring is important. It can eliminate an savings of buying a used engine if you have to go see the dealer to get new ones. If you can can find the same model engine you have now you already have the cables and controls.

Soft Spot on bow of Boston Whaler, please help?

I have a 1 ft by 1 ft soft spot on the bow of my 11 ft boston whaler. There is no way of getting underneath it to fix it. Does anybody know a way on how to fix the soft spot. I look forward to your answers, thank you.Soft Spot on bow of Boston Whaler, please help?
It still depends on where the soft spot is. If it wraps right around the bow along the keel you may have to cut out the area and replace it. If it's in the flats near the bow you may be able to just drill holes and pour some resin through the holes to allow it to reattach. You also don't mention whether any water has gotten into the area to cause the delamination. If it's wet you can still use the same techniques, but first you'll want to allow it to drain and dry out for a few weeks to allow the new glass to adhere to the old glass.

I would have helped to get more information from you, but you really need to see something like this to know the best way to repair it. One piece of good news is that a boat yard probably wouldn't charge all that much to help you in repairing this problem. You might even want to contact Boston Whaler, they pride themselves in the quality of their boats. If the delalmination is in any way their fault they might do the repair for free.

    Good luck with your repair..

you could also rig a loop of line tied to the side of the boat to use as an underwater step to help you get back in the boat.

I was just given a whaler for free. From what i have found there are two generations of my boat, a seventies version and an eighties version. How do you tell the difference between the two. Is there any physical differences? What generation Boston Whaler Squall do i have?
The Squall is considered a boat, thus it has a HIN that should be molded into the upper-right connor of the stern. The last few digits are the month and year. I had a early 70's boat that didn't have the HIN molded in. That started in '74 but if it's an 80's boat it would be the "new model". No number.....old style.

So, as best as I can tell you, take your time ,do your homework "research" all boats your interested in and be completely happy with the boat you buy/purchase. Go on-line and take a look at the Grady-White 330 Express. Although the 300 Marlin would have done just fine for me, my lady goes with me on a regular basis, she loves being out on the water even if she is not fishing. Happy fishing!

I am refinishing a boston whaler - can i just fibreglass or should i worry about a clearcoat?

i recently acquired a 13' boston whaler, which was in pretty rough shape. i removed all the crap (the guy who owned it before me installed a lot of unnecessary things into the hull, and didn't use stainless so it all rusted out).

i've filled all the holes from the rusted bolts with an expanding foam, and have sanded all the areas in question.

i was planning to just lay a few layers of fibreglass over each section, and sand again, and then paint the entire boat. but a friend said i should just clearcoat - as that's what i'd be glassing over anyways.

any suggestions? thanks!I am refinishing a boston whaler - can i just fibreglass or should i worry about a clearcoat?
    1. you will need to fill and sand the repairs will an epoxy filler.

    2. prime repairs with epoxy undercoat/ highbuild

    3. sand hull and repairs smooth with 180 grit or smoother.

    4. mask fittings etc that you dont want paint on

    5. clean surface with a cleaning solvent- prepsol

    6. paint hull with new paint - see marine paint stockist for info on correct paint choice for your use, experience and application method

This a guide of the minimum preparation that should be done to paint a glass hull by brush.

I think your friend is talking about gelcoat which is hard to make repairs look good especially if you have to ask how

I think painting the hull is the way to go for you

How wide is a boston whaler outrage?

How wide is a 1999 boston whaler 21 outrage WITH the trailer? How wide is a boston whaler outrage?
Because of the flare of the sides and gunwales, most boats are wider then the trailer they sit on. A 99 outrage 21 has a beam of 8'6", this is probably the widest point.

You should try a 28C. A 28C has the same cup volume as a 32A, so if 32A cups generally fit you, a 28C should work. If the cups of your 32A are too small, try a 28D; if the cups are too large, try a 28B. You may have to buy online, but you can find them.

    Period, pregnant, or what?!?

Okay so I got my period last month on Jun 24th, so this calculator told me I ovulated on July 8th. Well I ended up having unprotected sex with my boyfriend of almost a year that day. No condom no pulling out =/ I am however on birth control but I was taking antibiotics just a few days before that so I know that that lowers the effectiveness. I also missed a pill or two but took it the next day. and haven't been taking em at the same time of day since my sleeping schedules WAY OFF! But I started spotting on july 22nd ( light red %26amp; pinkish liquid when i wiped) and took a test on the 24th. then later that day i had cramps not HORRIBLE but not light either and I had felt blood and wiped and there was maybe 2 or 3 clumps the size of a dime or smaller. and then a little less the next morning. I still have symptoms and now my boobs are starting to hurt (when they didn't before) i've peed like 4 or 5 times in 3 hours. I feel SO sick to my stomach everything stinks, im always tired and emotional, i have no appetite except for sweets, cupcakes, soft cookies, cake with buttercream frosting, etc. and cold fruit, strawberries, melon, etc. Should I take another test or were the little clots a dead give away that im not? IM SO CONFUSED ! I'm about 18, i know its bad but in a way im hoping that i am, i miscarried once before and i was just in the worst depression of my lifeee. me and my boyfriend have the best relationship and i know we'd both love it with all we have. he doesn't wanna put it up or abort it (thank god) but someone please help or explain !Period, pregnant, or what?!?
You might be pregnant, you might not be. You need to take a test. My friend fell pregnant at 16 when she didn't take her birth control properly - in the same way you are not taking yours properly.

If you aren't pregnant then you need to either start taking your pills properly, i.e. on time every day, or switch to injections or an implant. If you miss a pill or take one more than 12 hours late you need to use condoms for the next 7 days. If you are taking antibiotics you need to use condoms all the time you are taking them and for 7 days afterwards.Period, pregnant, or what?!?

Where can i find a new crome front triple tree with a 5-8 deg rake for my 73 honda cl350?

i want to turn my bike into a rigid frame chopper so i am looking for info to do this on the cl350. I already cut the frame and have it stripped down to the motor only. I found weld yourself rigid kit on ebay (i will have a local welding shop do the work) but need more finishing info on it. I want to run a fat rear tire and switch front and rear out for disk brakes too. the goal is to keep it low to the ground. I got it with 4.25/85-18 rear and 3.25/19 fronts on it. I would like to go down in height both front and rear. For the rear i want something very fat . Something that would fill a nice size fender. I am betting if i go down in height the chain sproket on the rear wheel needs to be larger(any calculators for this?). I cannot find any manufacutes that make a all crome bolt on raked tripple tree for it 5-8 deg.

I have seen these peoples kits

    http://www.chopper-kit.co.uk/ame-chopper-kit-installation.htm

but they have none for cl350'sWhere can i find a new crome front triple tree with a 5-8 deg rake for my 73 honda cl350?
You will have to have the triple clamp made because no one sells custom parts for that bike. If you want a smaller diameter rear wheel, you can buy 16" rim and spoke sets from Buchanan. http://www.buchananspokes.com/Excel_chrm鈥?/a>

By the way, if your new rear tire has a smaller diameter than the stock wheel and tire you will have a lower final drive ratio. This means better acceleration but lower top speed. To compensate, the rear sprocket would need to be smaller. Best bet would be to get a larger counter shaft sprocket if you can, but no more than 1 or 2 teeth larger than stock.

The only thing limiting the width of the rear tire is how wide your frame is. But keep in mind that if the tire is a lot wider than stock you will have interference with chain. This can be remedied, but it is very complex, not to mention expensive too.

  • We are happy in our marriage and think its time for a baby. Could i possibly be pregnant?

My last period was March 5, 2009. I came off the orthotricyclen birth control pills Feb. 20, 2009. I have always had regular periods... Me and my husband have been trying since March. (and the end of Feb), and we even done the ovulation calculator. Like i said my last period was March 5, and today is April 13, 2009. I have had little breast tenderness, frequently peeing, a little eating xtra, and about 2 weeks ago was very nauseated, and i was suppose to start my period also 2 weeks ago. I was cramping and felt like i was on my period that whole week, now 2 weeks later, i feel fine and feel normal. I feel like i usually do once my period ended. I been really tired lately and a little bit moody, everyone has noticed a change in my breast size and in my attitude. My aunt and friends believe i am pregnant. my friend who is 11 weeks pregnant just moved in and she even says the same thing. My husband says i am. He has like a feeling. I havent taken a test b/c i have bad luck with them. I have had a miscarriage do to the birth control last year. so i figured i should wait. How long would you suggest and would you say i was pregnant? Thanks, no smart a comments please. I am really tired and just want some answers please? We are happy in our marriage and think its time for a baby. Could i possibly be pregnant?
Go get a test! You are probably pregnant if your period is 2 weeks late! Don't be scared, it's better to know than not to know cause if you are then you are stressing over all this for nothing and the stress can hurt your baby. Just take a test and your questions will all be answered. I was really scared to take one too cause my husband and i had been trying for 5 months and not having any luck, but i just made myself take the test cause i needed to know and it was POSITIVE! It really sounds like you are gonna get a positive this time cause you are having all the same symptoms i was having and still am having!! Good luck and baby dust!We are happy in our marriage and think its time for a baby. Could i possibly be pregnant?
    Hi

if your period was due 2 weeks ago, you can test now and see what it says. it should be accurate by now.

it sounds like you may be pregnant.

best of luck and baby dust to you ! =)

Is a 52/18 fixie gear ratio very fast?

I recently bought a fixed gear road bike used that is set up 52/18 with 27" tires. Since I live in Denver I haven't been able to ride it yet because of the ice. I checked some of the gear ratio calculators and got conflicing answers. Is this gear ratio really stiff? I want to train on this bike on 20 to 30-mile rides that are fairly flat with a few hills (Central and South Denver). What is a 52/18 ratio most appropriate for? If I need to back off on the chainring size, I would like to do it soon while the weather is still bad.Is a 52/18 fixie gear ratio very fast?
Gear Development is the distance your bike will travel with one pedal revolution. It is also the key to finding the answer to your question.

To find your gear development, use this formula:

    (GD in feet)=(# chainring teeth)/(# cog teeth) X 27inches X 3.14 / 12

To find your speed in Miles Per Hour, use this formula:

MPH=GD X RPM X .0114 (where RPM is your cadence)

So with your bike set up.the GD would be 20.41 feet, and your MPH at say, a 90 RPM cadence would be 20.94 MPH. That is a pretty reasonable speed for a solo ride.

In a typical ride, you might range from 70 RPM up to 115 RPM. That would give you a comfortable speed range of 16 to 27 MPH. If your terrain (and legs) support that, then you are good to go! If not, then you can use the formulas above to figure out the perfect setup for you.

Hope this helps! Is a 52/18 fixie gear ratio very fast?
that's a pretty decent gear for flats...you'll have to plan your hills out by resting before you get to a hill and then hitting it with a good steady run....I once rode a whole winter on a 40x13 which is close to a 53x17...you should be able to ride 20mph on the flats

I used to drink Capt Morgans Spiced rum in Aurora I got on Colfax Ave YoIs a 52/18 fixie gear ratio very fast?
Thats a pretty high gear... about 2.9:1 ratio. It is definitely a good gear for flats and slight inclines but those classified as "climbs" will be out of the question for most people. You might want to go with long crank arms... perhaps 175 or 180mm if you keep those rings so you have a little more torque. I would personally try to get the ratio to about 2.3:1... 42 to 44 tooth chainring w/18T rear.

As mentioned before you'll need to time your hills with a good head start but be careful you don't pull a muscle.
Your going to need to try a few different combinations out, fixed is just like that. I know i swapped out the gears on mine a few times looking for that perfect balance of speed and efficiency, It's going to depend allot on the terrain where you live and your strength. Speaking of pulling muscles mirage may have pulled the one between his ears so careful of dudes answers........

Sick of being the fat best friend?

I haven't been in a relationship since eighth grade. It lasted two weeks. I'm now 17; all of my good friends have boyfriends and I'm stuck being the third/fifth/seventh wheel when we go out.

I'm 5'0 and I weigh 175 pounds, with a 38DD bust. I have Hashimoto's Disease. My mother recently lost 45 pounds and claims that fat disgusts her. She consistently gives me **** for eating what I eat, even when it's soup. Now before you go grab your calculator to go check my BMI, save yourself the energy. I'm a size 14.

I'm tired of hearing the same six sentences on how to lose weight: water/exercise/food/surgery/pills/etc.

Help?Sick of being the fat best friend?
Okay, so I used to be over sixty pounds over weight, and I was really depressed about it. So I kicked my butt into gear. I usually ate about 3000 calories a day, but I dropped down to around 1000. You'd be REALLY surprised at how much of a difference just eating healthier can make. And cutting back 2000 calories might sound like a lot, but it's not bad at all. I just made small changes: instead of having more chips, I took more carrots, I cut out the cheese on the eggs, and instead of ice cream I had yogurt for a snack. The eating right I say is the hard part, because it takes TONS of self control, but once you get into it, it's easy.

Then I exercised every day. I'd ride an excersize bike for about half an hour--forty five minutes per day, then do 100 crunches. I'd do that in the afternoon. Then in the evening I'd walk around the neighborhood. Excersizing is TONS easier if you have music you can get into--you forget you're working out. Some days if I was sore or just lazy I'd only do the crunches and the walk. It's still extra movement (by the way--when I was overweight, the only excersize I got was gym class and walking from class to class.)

The thing I think REALLY made a difference was that I drank TOOOONS of water. Probably a gallon a day. Instead of grabbing a soda, I'd grab a water. If you don't normally drink water, you could buy some individual Crystal Light flavoring packets and it tastes like Kool-Aid without the sugar. Or if you really do need a soda, make it diet. I know Diet Dr. Pepper tastes IDENTICAL to regular. Also, switch your juice from maybe the 5% real juice stuff to the 100% real juice. That way when you drink it, you're getting fluid, but also a serving of fruit.

I did all that above, and within two weeks, my stomach was visibly smaller, my arms and legs were more toned, my face was thinner, and I'd lost ten pounds.

Over the summer, I lost fifty pounds, and I didn't have a muffin top anymore :]

Sorry for the long answer, but all of that REALLY works. I know you said you didn't want to hear the water/exercise/food thing. But I swear what I did worked.

    Good luck.
There isn't much that can be done beyond water/exercise/food/surgery/pills/etc.. But you might be able to shed some weight if you try cutting down on the proportion of the foods your eating. I have heard that it takes your brain 20 minutes to get signals from the stomach the indicate it is full, which is why many people over eat. So maybe if you ate 3/4 of what you normally do, while eating slower, you'd still feel full but drop a few pounds in the process. Hope that that helps! Good luck!Sick of being the fat best friend?
your mom probley needs to lay off. she dont need to forget that she was 45 pounds fatter than she is now. be ur self. if god wanted u to b a size -00 then he would have made u one he didnt. most over weight people that turn skinny are mean and mad at the world because they have to whatch what the eat to stay that way. dont be lik that.

    goodluck!!!
I'm in a similar boat (I don't understand why I use this expression.)

    I'm 5'3 and 195 with 40DD's at age 16.

    What I've done:

count the calories for one day when you eat as you normally do. Yes, it's a pain in the butt, but its worth it. Then take 15% of those calories, and subtract them. That's your new total of calories you should be eating to lose 1-2 lbs a week. If you're willing to sacrafice more, then subtract even more. Keeping track of your calories is helpful, because you can see what makes you lose weight.

Also, drink green tea. 3-5 cups a day can raise your metabolism by up to 50%. And never skip breakfast! It gets your metabolism going.

I also signed up at Self.com/challenge

It keeps track of your progress and gives great recipes and exercises.

Best of luck!Sick of being the fat best friend?
Oh, c'mon, don't be upset. You can still make it through to do dieting!

commenting about on what you said about "sick of how to lose weight" , Yes, i agree with u, why? Because people suggested you were most likely doing the myth of dieting, not the fact about dieting!

It surpised me at the 1st time I realised that it's true!

Why all you done didn't work - it's because you might don't think about how your organ work or the people made you think this way. You have to know and...... OK, I can't go further because I'm not an expert for this. But I can really feel wht you feel of your condition.

I give you url , read through the sea text to find how that facts about dieting are.
well have u tried the water/exresize/food? with your disease will make things harder for you but not impossible. you can still do it. what are all the medicines your takeing. Consider all the side effects! is the medicine really helping or makeing it worse make sure u know. only take whats really nessicary to feel better.

exersizeing is painful, but PAIN IS GAIN (gain as in gaining what you want(being healthy)) u gota go thru the pain to loose the fat. its worth it.
